Finalists announced for 2007 ACRAs: Full List

Four of Australia’s best-known talkback personalities will battle it out to win this year’s Best Talk Presenter (metropolitan) in a year when the industry celebrates forty years of talkback radio. The finalists for that category in the Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs) include last year’s winner, Neil Mitchell (3AW), as well as Steve Price (2UE), Ray Hadley (2GB) and Bob Francis (5AA).

Non-metro finalists for Best Talk Presenter are Jennifer Menchin (2BS), Glen Wilson (6KG), Sandra Moon (3WM), Matt Conlon (8HA), Charles Wooley (MRRWorks), Mike Jeffreys (2CC), Mike Welsh (2CC) and John McKenzie (Easy 846).

The Best Current Affairs Commentator (metropolitan) category will be decided between Neil Mitchell (3AW), Derryn Hinch (3AW), Steve Price (2UE) and last year’s winner, Ray Hadley (2GB).

The well-known talk personalities join many other commercial radio professionals as finalists in the 19th annual ACRAs. Winners to be announced at a gala ceremony at Melbourne’s Crown Casino on October 13.

Another hotly contested category is the On-Air Team (metropolitan) gong with finalists including last year’s winners Kyle and Jackie O (2Day FM); Merrick and Rosso (Nova 969); Hamish and Andy (Fox FM 101.9), The Cage (Triple M, Melbourne), Keith Conlon, Tony Pilkington, Jon Blake, Jane Doyle and Chris McDermott from 5AA Breakfast in Adelaide and the 3AW Football Team (3AW).

The winner for the last two years in Best Music Personality (metropolitan), Nova 969’s Bianca Dye, is joined by other finalists Rob Duckworth (Triple M, Sydney), Dave Williams (Triple M, Melbourne) and Jabba (Nova 969).

Best Documentary category (metropolitan) will be decided between a Triple M Sydney documentary called “Anzac Day” and three specials on the life of Steve Irwin including “A Tribute to Steve Irwin” (Radiowise Media Networks, owners of this website), “Steve Irwin Memorial” (Triple M, Sydney) and “Steve Irwin – The Loss of an Icon” (2UE).

Best Station Produced Commercial will be hotly contested between two of the DMG Novas in Brisbane and Melbourne; DMG’s Melbourne Vega; ARN’s Mix 106.5, Sydney; and Southern Cross Broadcasting’s 2UE, Sydney.

Organised by Commercial Radio Australia, the Awards include 32 categories, which cover all areas of radio broadcasting including news, talk, sport, music and entertainment. The ACRAs differ from television’s Logie Awards, in that they are peer judged with judging panels comprised of industry members.

There are four new categories this year: Best Show Producer (Music and Entertainment); Best Show Producer (Talkback and Current Affairs). The former Best Salesperson category has been split into Best Agency Salesperson and Best Direct Salesperson. The decision to create a category for producers has been particularly well received by often under-recognised producing staff within stations.

Commercial Radio Australia CEO Joan Warner says the Awards are highly competitive and set a new standard for the event every year:

“The diversity of winners over the past few years highlights the depth of radio in Australia. It will also be a special year given talkback will celebrate its 40th birthday this month.”

This year’s Awards will continue the successful format introduced last year, with statues presented over dinner.

A feature of the Awards is the Hall of Fame, which acknowledges a lifelong commitment to the Australian radio industry. Hall of Fame inductees include last year’s winner, Frank Hyde and previous inductees, Rod Muir, John Laws, Bob Rogers and Gary O’Callaghan. Hall of Fame recipients are nominated by industry colleagues and decided by a high level judging committee.
